How to File a FOIA Request

What is FOIA?

The Arkansas Freedom of Information Act gives citizens the right to access public records. Government agencies must provide access unless records fall under specific exemptions.

The 3 Business Day Deadline

Under Ark. Code Ann. ยง 25-19-105(b), agencies have three (3) business days to respond. They must either provide the records, explain why they're exempt, or give a timeline.

What If My Request Is Denied?

  1. Request a written explanation citing the specific exemption
  2. File a complaint with the Attorney General: arkansasag.gov or call (800) 482-8982
  3. Report it to us: Submit a tip so we can track the violation

Tips for Success

  • Be specific about what you want
  • Keep requests reasonable in scope
  • Always send via email for a timestamped record
  • Follow up if you don't hear back within 3 business days
